Tax and customs authority TAKS has two sniffer dogs whose job it is to detect illegal substances being sent to the Faroes.

Although 14 customs officers and two sniffer dogs are far from enough to meet today’s demands, illegal drugs are regularly being intercepted at the borders.

In March, a young man was handed a one-year prison sentence after being caught smuggling in six kilos of cannabis.

In July, the dogs detected cocaine on a man, who was later given a seven-month jail term for trying to smuggle 47 grams of cocaine.

Later that month, two young men were caught with 28 and 77 grams of cannabis in their intestines. The men are currently awaiting trial.
