Americans want Faroese view of themselves
US authorities have launched a survey into what Faroese people think about America and its role in foreign policy affairs

The US Embassy has commissioned a survey into the Faroese attitudes towards the United States.

Over the past few weeks, Danish polling firm Epinion has been calling 500 Faroese citizens asking them about their political views and a variety of questions regarding America and its role in international politics, with an emphasis on defence policy.

The survey comes amid increased US interest in the Arctic region.

In August, President Donald Trump expressed an interest in buying Greenland; last month, defence vessel USS Donald Cook visited Runavík, and earlier this month, the Danish defence minister said that she is looking into the possibility of setting up a new radar in the now defunct Arctic Command Centre in Mjørkadalur, Streymoy, which was active during the Cold War period.

And in a speech last week on defence policies in the Arctic region, US Ambassador to Denmark, Carla Sands, said: “We need to ask the difficult questions – do Greenland and the Faroe Islands have sufficient national defense resources? Does the Kingdom of Denmark need to reprioritize or supplement its defense resources in order to defend itself?”
