People who commit sex crimes against children and youths should be given harsher penalties, says Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen.

The Danish High Court recently extended the sentences in two cases involving rape and other sexual offences.

The Faroese and the Danish criminal codes were upgraded at the same time in 2016, but certain aggravating provisions added to the Danish law turned out to be insufficiently defined in the Faroese translation.

In the wake of the extended sentences, the Prime Minister says that these aggravating provisions will now be clarified in the Faroese criminal code so that they will also apply in the Faroes.
