A 55-year-old man died on 21 June last year after being run over by a forklift at the building site of the new Varðin Pelagic filleting plant.

An inquest has now ruled that the main cause of the accident was negligence on the part of the now deceased worker.

The inquest has concluded that the man’s employer, building firm MTV Byggivirki, has not breached the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Accident occurred during phone call

Investigations have shown that the man had walked away from his work partner to make the phone call to his employer prior to the accident occurred.

While talking on the phone, he had walked close to a forklift, which suddenly began to move and ended up running him over.

The inquest concluded that the accident was the result of serious negligence by the victim, who had extensive experience in working on building sites.

The forklift driver says he did not see anyone before he started the vehicle.

No eyewitnesses were present at the time of the accident.
