Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen yesterday met with his Icelandic counterpart, Katrín Jakobsdóttir.

The two prime ministers agreed to strengthen the two countries’ cooperation on trade, research, culture and education.

They also agreed to follow the Western line on sanctions against Russia. Both countries are taking in refugees from Ukraine, and they agreed to share knowledge and experience on how best to accommodate refugees.

The Faroe Islands and Iceland have a lot in common in terms of language, culture, history and as societies with shared interests in the North Atlantic region.

This commonality of interests is a sustainable basis for continuing and expanding the good cooperation between the two countries, the Prime Minister’s Office wrote in a press release.

“Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has serious implications for us in the North Atlantic,” said Nielsen.

“Iceland is our sister nation, and it is important that we continue to strengthen our ties with Iceland. In these times of uncertainty, it is particularly important that we focus on establishing common ground with all our North Atlantic neighbours.”
