The National Gallery of the Faroe Islands has long had an impressive collection of paintings by Sámal Joensen-Mikines (1906-1979), arguably the most internationally famous Faroese painter.

This collection is now expanding after a generous donation from a Danish art collector.

“This is a magnificent present and a great addition to our Mikines collection,” says National Gallery manager Karina Lykke Grand.

Valued in the millions

The eight paintings, spanning the 1931-1962 period, include Faroese and Danish landscapes, people drinking in a bar (see above) and two large Christian-themed paintings.

According to the gallery manager, the total value of the eight paintings is in the millions of kroner.

The National Gallery is currently closed due to repair works. The expanded Mikines collection will be on public display when the gallery reopens on 1 February.
