It should be easier for immigrants to use their skills in a way that allows them to function in Faroese society on an equal par with everyone else.

This is one of the key objectives laid out by the Ministry of Environment, Trade and Industry, which also oversees integration, in its new integration bill.

The bill aims to improve the conditions for immigrants to become an active part of political, financial, social, cultural and labour market relations in the country.

It also seeks to ensure that all immigrants are given fully satisfactory information on conditions, requirements and opportunities in the country.

The plan is to introduce as a permanent residency requirement that applicants have demonstrated commitment and a will to become part of Faroese society.

According to the ministry, to justify such conditions, already included in the Aliens Act, the country must be able to provide the appropriate integration solutions.

At the start of this year, 4 percent of the Faroese population had a non-Faroese/Danish background.

The consultation deadline for the integration is 25 January 2022.
