People interested in sustainable food production and sovereignty will be meeting at a special conference in Tórshavn’s Nordic House over the weekend.

“We have seen great progress in food production in the Faroes in recent years, not least due to an increasing consumer demand for sustainable food production,” says farmer Sigert Paturson, who is one of the organisers of the ‘Matvit’ conference on sustainable food sovereignty.

“Although we do not have our own ecological certification in the Faroes, ecological methods are an integral part of our food production.”

Co-organiser Elisabeth Skarðhamar Olsen explains that food sustainability has been gaining traction in the past couple of years, first due to the Covid pandemic and now due to the war in Ukraine.

“The Faroes will of course continue to import food products from abroad,” she says.

“But times like these remind us to consider reducing our dependence on food imports by promoting grassroot innovation with regards to local foods.”
