Strong beer and cider bill scrapped
Independent MP’s proposal to allow breweries to sell strong beverages on site was voted down yesterday at the third reading

On Monday it seemed clear that Parliament would pass the bill to let breweries sell strong beverages on site.

The government had promised independent MP Magni Laksáfoss to vote in favour of his bill, provided that he supported the 2019 budget proposal in return.

But this did not happen as the bill was voted down at the third reading yesterday.

Fifteen MPs voted in favour of the bill, while 16 voted against.

It remains unclear now whether Laksáfoss will support the budget proposal.

He says it is a clear breach of an agreement that not all government members voted in favour of the bill, adding that he needs to have a word with the government party leaders before further steps are taken.
