Anti-doping law in the making

A new bill seeks to establish clear rules regarding doping and other sports ethics issues such as match fixing, which will apply to all sports and gyms.

Efforts to combat doping in Faroese sports began in 2003 when Danish and Faroese sports authorities signed a cooperation agreement. In 2016, national sports federation ÍSF introduced its own anti-doping by-laws.

The following year, the first anti-doping inspectors were appointed. In 2018, a number of Faroese gyms signed a cooperation deal with Antidoping Denmark.

However, the Data Protection Committee intervened, informing national sports federation ÍSF that legal authority is required for the processing of personal data from doping tests in the Faroes.

This has now prompted the culture minister to introduce the new anti-doping bill.

ÍSF estimates the annual anti-doping inspection costs at DKK 500,000, an amount which has already been earmarked for the purpose in the 2020 state budget.
