The Court of the Faroe Islands yesterday heard its first case regarding the so-called Ramsarkunngerðin bird protection law.

It was decided that eight men, who were caught driving jet skis in and around Nólsoy harbour in July 2018, should pay DKK 3,000 each for breaching the Ramsarkunngerðin.

The law includes a clause that bans the use of water scooters less than 500 metres from land in Nólsoy, Skúvoy and Mykines between 15 April and 31 August. It also states that water scooters must not be parked on these islands.

The Ramsarkunngerðin law was introduced in April 2018 with the aim of protecting fragile birdlife by reducing noise near small islands.
