It is not only Faroese people who are excited about today’s start of the football season. Live football TV coverage from the Faroes has become a sought-after commodity abroad too.

Shortly after the Faroese Football Association announced the 9 May start to the domestic football season, cable TV network provider Televarpið, which owns the television rights to Faroese premier league football, signed streaming deals with three Scandinavian media companies.

The first deal was made with Norwegian TV network TV2. This deal will involve live coverage from the first 12 rounds of the Faroese premier league, featuring the same commentators who report on Champions League and English Premier League games.

Televarpið then signed a deal with a Swedish company which provides live football TV coverage to betting companies. This deal will cover the entire season.

And now Danish tabloid newspaper Ekstrabladet has also agreed to stream every round of the premier league this season on its website.

The Faroe Islands are one of the first nations to start their football season. But other leagues will start soon too. The German Bundesliga is due to start next Saturday and the Danish Superliga at the end of this month.
