Huge amount of farmed fish killed in harsh weather
Thousands of tonnes of salmon in Bakkafrost’s fish farms in Suðuroy have died after a week of heavy storms

About a million fish, with a total weight of more than 5,000 tonnes, died in Bakkafrost’s fish farms in Froðba and Hvalba, Suðuroy, last week.

Bakkafrost CEO Regin Jacobsen says that the fish in the Froðba farm simply failed to survive 5-6 days of constant harsh weather.

He estimates the export value of the dead fish at around DKK 300 million.

Less work in Suðuroy

According to Statistics Faroe Islands, some 112 people in Suðuroy were employed in the fish farming industry last year.

Jacobsen acknowledges that the loss of fish means there will be less processing work at the Suðuroy fileting plant this autumn.
