Big increase in reports of violence against women

This year has seen the highest-ever number of domestic violence reports submitted to Tórshavn’s Women’s Refuge.

So far this year, 648 reports have come in, which is an increase of 116 on all of 2019 and 114 more than in 2018.

These figures were announced in a joint press release from Tórshavn’s Women’s Refuge, the Women’s Society in Tórshavn and Amnesty International Føroyar, issued today to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The three associations wish to increase public awareness of this problem in the hope that the rising domestic violence statistics are turned around in the coming years.
