More men than women die from cancer
Far more men than women die from cancer or cardiovascular diseases, which are the two most common causes of death in the Faroes.
In general, fewer people are dying from cardiovascular diseases while cancer deaths have remained relatively unchanged over the past 20 years.
These are some of the conclusions in the latest Statistics Faroe Islands report on life expectancy and causes of death.

At the turn of the century, 80-90 men died annually from cardiovascular diseases. This figure has now come down to 50. For women, the figure was between 70 and 85, and it has now dropped to below 40.
The number of cancer deaths has only seen a slight increase over this period.
In 2019, 60 men and 42 women in the Faroes died from cancer.
According to oncology specialist Tordis Kristiansdóttir, one reason why more men than women die from cancer may be that men are generally more hesitant to seek medical help when they feel symptoms.
