New district planned near Velbastaður
A new residential area and an industrial estate may soon be built near Velbastaður where rocks from the Sandoy subsea tunnel are currently being dumped
The plan is to build homes on the west side of the main road (right side on the photo) and an industrial estate on the east side

When rocks blasted from the Sandoy subsea tunnel was dumped in a location near Velbastaður, the intial plan was cover the rocks with grass.
Tórshavn City Council has now gone one step further and is planning to build an entire district, complete with homes and an industrial estate, in the area.
Since the area is next to a main road, an approval is required from road authority Landsverk before work can begin.
The tunnel company has signed a deal with the city council to hand over the agreements made with the landowner once the tunnel project is completed.
