Fólkaflokkurin appoints new party leader
After weeks of speculation about who would succeed Jørgen Niclasen as the leader of Fólkaflokkurin, a decision was finally made yesterday evening.
The choice had narrowed down to Christian Andreasen and Beinir Johannesen, and yesterday’s internal party vote resulted in 15 votes for Andreasen and 12 for Johannesen.
Andreasen, 62, was long considered as a favourite candidate for the position; however, pundits doubted whether he would be able to take on this role given his busy schedule as an MP, lawyer and member of numerous committees.
New priorities
He says that he will reconsider some of his other positions in order to focus on reuniting his party following a period of internal division.
”My new position will require a lot of time and commitment, and I will now be looking at how I can optimise my efforts,” he said yesterday.
“I will, for example, reconsider my current role as president of the Faroese Football Association as it doesn’t seem right for the leader of a political party to hold this position.”
