Police have arrested two men, aged 17 and 19, in connection with two burglaries at Tórshavn’s National Hospital.

In the first burglary, which took place on 10 January, mobile phones, earpieces and computer screens were stolen.

On 22 January, the burglars returned through the underground tunnel system that connects various departments of the hospital.

The burglars entered the administration building by sawing the doors open.

Professional equipment

CCTV camera footage revealed that the men were wearing boiler suits, gloves and face masks, making it impossible to obtain fingerprints or DNA from the burglars.

However, using the camera footage and various forensic techniques, police managed to identify the two men, who were arrested on Tuesday.

They have both pleaded guilty to two cases of burglary, and the stolen goods have been returned.

Security tightened

Security levels at the National Hospital are generally high, says hospital CEO Steinar Eirikstoft.

However, these incidents have prompted tighter security measures, such as installing more CCTV cameras and tighter controls in the tunnel system.

“It can be difficult to defend against the use of brute force such as saws, but we will make sure we make it as difficult as possible for burglars in the future.”
