Slættaratindur landowners plan to introduce hiking fees next summer.

The reason is that it has been difficult to secure funding for constructing a reception house and a new footpath.

Slættaratindur is one of the most popular hiking trails in the country, with an estimated 5,600 hikers over a 10-week period this summer, according to Visit Faroe Islands’ new digital registration system.

However, locals say the real figure for a full summer season is closer to 10,000-15,000.

According to the registration system, the country’s most popular hiking trail is the village path between Tórshavn and Kirkjubø, with more than 7,000 hikers registered over the same 10-week period this summer.
