The government has proposed changes to the law on unemployment benefits.

Under the current law, employers are required pay workers for two sick days per year. The new proposal seeks to increase this to seven days per year.

Such a change may have unfortunate consequences, says Niels Winther, who heads the House of Industry.

“If this change is approved, it may discourage employers from hiring workers who are likely to need many sick days, effectively pushing these people out of the labour market,” he says.

“Faroese employers are generally keen to show social responsibility, but this change would be costly for them, especially the smaller companies.”
