MP: allow people to legally change gender

MP: allow people to legally change gender
Independent MP has proposed an amendment to the national register law which would allow legal gender marker changes
Independent MP Sonja Jógvansdóttir.

23.08.2018 - 16:20

A new proposal aims to enable people whose biological identity does not match their gender identity to formally change their gender in the eyes of the law.

A formal gender recognition certificate enables a person to receive a civil registration number and choose a name corresponding to their identified gender.

It also entitles the holder to receive a new passport and a new driver's licence.

The bill was presented to Parliament yesterday by independent MP Sonja Jógvansdóttir and will have its first reading next Friday.
