Growing need for new incinerator

The country’s incinerators are receiving more garbage every year, and soon there will be a need to build new plants, says the head of the Intermunicipal Recycling Association (IRF).

Last year there was a 16-percent increase in waste material at the incinerators, and this year has seen an additional 7.8-percent increase.

Incinerator plants in the Faroes have an estimated service life of 10-15 years. But with the current demand and pressure the plants may only last for eight years, according to Poul Andrias Joensen, CEO of IRF.

This, he says, means that IRF may have to start building a new incinerator plant sooner than previously thought.

The IRF management has scheduled a meeting with the relevant authorities next month to discuss the details of expanding the current incinerator system.
