Nations League campaign off to a perfect start

The Faroese national football team proved worthy of the favourites tag placed on them ahead of Friday’s match against Malta with a 3-1 win.

The first goal came in the 31th minute courtesy of Jóan Símun Edmundsson, who pounced on a mistake by the Malta defence.

In the post-match interview, the Maltese coach used this goal as an example of just how costly a mistake can be.

Edmundsson’s goal sparked a fire in the Faroese team, and in the 38th minute, Rene Shaki Joensen made it 2-0.

Shortly before half-time, however, Malta’s Michael Mifsud scored for a half-time score of 2-1. Replays showed that that Mifsud was off-side, but the goal was allowed.

Any Faroese doubts were wiped away six minutes into the second half when a clever pass from Sølvi Vatnhamar made it easy for Hallur Hansson to bring the score to 3-1.

The Faroese team had a few chances after this goal, but they generally played more defensively for the rest of the game.

With the win, the Faroes now top group D3 in the UEFA Nations League, as the other game in the group, between Azerbaijan and Kosovo, ended in a 0-0 draw.

Kosovo will be hosting the Faroes in Pristina tonight, while Malta take on Azerbaijan at home.
