According to official estimates, 64 people died from Hurricane Maria. However, a new report suggests that the overall death toll is above 4,600.

The study reveals that an accurate count was complicated by the power outages and widespread devastation wreaked by the storm, which is ranked as the third costliest cyclone in the United States since 1900.

A research team headed by Harvard scientists came up with the new figures by surveying 3,299 randomly selected households in the months following the hurricane.
