MPs debating new social security act

Parliament has started debating social minister Elsebeth Mercedis Gunnleygsdóttir’s five proposals for a new social security act.
According to the minister, the new law puts its main focus on the individual’s needs. Everyone should have equal opportunities, but not everyone should receive the same services, she adds.
Update on ”obsolete” law
The new law seeks to involve the individual in all stages of a process, with a particular focus on prevention and autonomy.
The new social security act will replace the old public assistance act, which is a Danish law from the 1960.
“Although a few amendments have been made to this law, it is in many ways obsolete in a modern society,” says Gunnleygsdóttir.
