MP wants to ban disposable plastic items

Parliament is debating a proposal from MP Ingilín Didriksen Strøm of Javnaðarflokkurin (Social Democratic party) to ban single-use plastic items.
Strøm argues that millions of tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans every year, causing a disaster to our ecosystem as it takes hundreds of years for nature to break down this plastic on its own.
Sustainable society
“Prognoses have shown that if we do not try to stop this, our oceans will contain more plastic than fish by the year 2050,” she says.
“This is a big problem, not least for a fishery nation such as the Faroe Islands.”
The MP adds that banning disposable plastic items is a big step towards a sustainable society favoured by all political viewpoints.
