Schools closing down on Monday
Stricter measures are being implemented to control the spread of the coronavirus

12.03.2020 - 11:11

Although the coronavirus situation is under control in the Faroe Islands, it is important to step up the level of emergency.

This was the key message from Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen, who this morning held a press conference together with the Minister of Health, the Chief Medical Officer and the Police Chief, outlining new measures in the fight against the coronavirus.

Here is a short summary of the new measures, which will come into force on Monday:

All schools and day-care centres will shut down.

All indoor events with more than 100 participants should be cancelled, and all bars and nightclubs are asked to close at 10pm.

Anyone who can work from home is advised to do so.

There is plenty of food in the country, and there is no need for hoarding.

Major restrictions will be made in the health service and in elderly care to ensure the safety of the weakest citizens.

To date, two people have tested positive for the coronavirus, and 33 are in quarantine.
