Corona restrictions make whale hunts “impossible”
Social distancing and hygiene guidelines need to change before whale hunting can resume, says whaling organiser

No whale hunts will be conducted as long as the current corona restrictions are in place.

This was the conclusion after whaling organisers met with the Minister of Fisheries.

Whaling organisers have avoided whale hunts since the corona restrictions were introduced on 12 March. But two weeks ago, Jacob Vestergaard, the Minister of Fisheries, said that whale hunts could resume as the coronavirus has now been eliminated in the Faroes.

However, after the meeting, the two parties agreed that it was best to put whale hunts on hold until the COVID-19 safety precautions change.

“In theory, it would certainly be possible to conduct whale hunts,” says Karl Johansen, the sheriff of Norðoyggjar and Eysturoy, “but I just cannot imagine a scenario in which whale hunters wear protective masks and carry hand gel in their pockets, so we will wait until the guidelines change.”
