Vocational education and training (VET) is on the rise in the Faroes.

The 137 new apprenticeship contracts signed in Q1 2022 represent the highest quarterly figure ever recorded by national vocational careers service Yrkisdepilin.

The number of new apprenticeships has been on a steady rise since 2018 when 100 new contracts were signed in Q1. The first quarter of last year saw 124 new contracts signed.

In the past four years, the most popular apprenticeship subject areas have been sales assistant and house carpenter.

The provisional figures for 2022 also indicate a strong preference for training as mechanics and electricians.

These four, together with office clerks, make up the five most popular subject areas for apprentices, totalling about 70 percent of all new apprenticeship contracts over the past four years.

Statistics from Yrkisdepilin show that mechanic apprentices tend to start earlier than others, with an average starting age of 18 over the past five years. At the other end of this scale are office clerk apprentices, who had an average starting age of 27.
