Miðflokkurin withdraws from governing coalition
An early election appears likely as opposition parties refuse to support minority coalition

Miðflokkurin today announced its withdrawal from the governing coalition with Sambandsflokkurin and Fólkaflokkurin.

This comes after Miðflokkurin’s party leader, Jenis av Rana, was relieved of his duties as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Culture this morning.

“The ball is in the Prime Minister’s court now,” Mr Rana said after the announcement.

Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen says he will consult with the remaining coalition members about what happens next.

All the opposition parties say they are unwilling to join the coalition, which now has a minority in Parliament, with only 15 out of a total of 33 seats.
