All new government cars to be electric
When public institutions purchase new vehicles, these should whenever possible be of the electric variety.
So says finance minister Ruth Vang, who last week sent out a circular letter to public institutions detailing the government’s car-purchase policy.
“This step is part of the previous government’s green energy transition plan, which suggested a ban on the purchase of fossil-fuel vehicles for public institutions from 2023,” she says.
The minister acknowledges that the new guidelines, which came into effect on 1 February, will incur additional costs for many public institutions.
“Electric vehicles tend to have a slightly higher purchase price. The requirement to purchase electric may be waived if an electric vehicle is significantly more expensive than its fossil-fuelled alternative.”
