Travellers from five selected countries can enter the Faroes provided they show a negative COVID-19 test result that’s no more than five days old

On Monday, the Faroese borders reopen to travellers from Denmark, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Germany.

Travel from other parts of the world will be restricted to Faroese citizens and people with specific work purposes in the country.

Faroese citizens are advised to limit their travels to the five countries mentioned above until further notice from the authorities.

Travellers from these five approved countries will be allowed to enter the Faroes if they can show a negative COVID-19 test result that’s no more than five days old at the Faroese passport control.

This requirement does not apply to Faroese residents returning home from abroad, but all travellers are urged to act responsibly during their travel and show particular care in the first days after arriving in the Faroes.

From Monday, the existing 14-day self-quarantine requirement will no longer apply to travellers from the five approved countries but will remain in place for travellers from all other countries.

The government is keen to point out that it is of the utmost importance that anyone who has travelled to the Faroes from abroad takes a COVID-19 test immediately upon noticing any symptoms.

New test centre

To further ease access to testing across the country, a new COVID-19 test centre will be set up as an addition to the existing three at the hospitals in Tórshavn, Klaksvík and Tvøroyri. The location of this centre has yet to be announced.

As part of the government’s strong focus on protecting the weak and the elderly, efforts are also being made to expand the separate testing system for healthcare and elderly care workers.

Special system for sailors

About 100 sailors travel to the Faroe Islands every week. A special system has been put in place to accommodate these workers.

The key principle of this system is to waive the 14-day self-quarantine requirement and make it easier for this group to get tested.

The government vows to keep a keen eye on how all these new changes pan out and will be prepared to review the changes should it become necessary.
