Covid expert: be extra careful in the coming weeks
Public health professor was concerned ahead of ólavsøka
Pál Weihe, professor of public health, is calling on the public to extra alert to Covid-19 symptoms after the national holidays

Two weeks ago, public health professor Pál Weihe expressed his concerns about ólavsøka becoming a potential Covid-19 hazard.

Just as it started to look like it would be possible to celebrate a near-normal ólavsøka, the risk suddenly rose significantly after 34 new Covid-19 cases were registered among sailors on two foreign ships docking near Klaksvík in the past week.

But despite repeated reminders from the authorities, social distancing guidelines were widely ignored during the ólavsøka celebrations.

As a result of this, Weihe is now calling on the public to be extra alert to Covid-19 symptoms over the next two weeks.

“I would advise anyone who feels even the slightest Covid-19 symptoms to get tested immediately,” he says.

“The symptoms usually do not appear until after a few days, but if you feel anything unusual, call your GP and ask to get tested. It’s an easy and quick process.”
