The 2021 state budget proposal, published on Wednesday, has earmarked DKK 3.4 million for education aimed at integrating immigrants into Faroese society.

This is an increase of DKK 1.4 million on this year’s appropriation. The proposal also seeks to grant evening schools an additional DKK 1.5 million to improve the teaching of Faroese as a foreign language.

New language tuition plan

An integral part of the new focus on integration is a new syllabus with Faroese as a second language.

This new syllabus will base all teaching of Faroese as a second language on the Common European Framework of references for Languages (CEFR).

Teaching materials, exam questions and analytic tools are currently being prepared, as is a diploma course for teachers of Faroese as a foreign language.

Almost 2,000 non-Danish citizens

In February this year, the number of nations represented in the Faroes exceeded 100.

At the start of this year, 3.9 percent of the Faroese population consisted of non-Danish citizens. In 1996, this figure was 0.8 percent.
