A total of 26 people have been admitted to the National Hospital’s Covid ward since the new wave began in mid-October.

Twelve of these were unvaccinated. Prior to October, the vast majority of hospitalised Covid patients were older people with underlying health problems.

“We’re now seeing an increasing number of younger, unvaccinated people being admitted to our Covid ward,” says Dr Tummas í Garði, chief operating officer of the Hospital Service.

Eleven of the 26 total since October were aged below 70, and nine of these eleven were unvaccinated.

“Although the vaccine does not give 100-percent protection against infection, it has been established that it protects well against serious illness that requires hospitalisation,” says the doctor.

“So it is not surprising to see an increasing number of unvaccinated patients in our Covid ward.”

More than 90 percent of the 12+ population has received two vaccine shots. Most of those who remain unvaccinated are in the 25-45 age group.
