Opera performed by children, for children

Prince Tamino, princess Pamina, bird catcher Papageno and his sweetheart Papagena, the three child spirits and the Queen of the Night.

Opera fans will recognise these names as characters in W. A. Mozart’s “Magic Flute” opera.

On Friday, we will be seeing these and the rest of the Magic Flute characters in a slightly revised format as the opera will be performed by a cast of 14 children.

The project is a collaboration between opera.fo, Tórshavn’s Evening School and the National Theatre.

“We launched opera.fo five years ago with the aim of cultivating a wider public interest in opera,” says Birita Adela Davidsen, who came up with the idea for the special opera format and adapted the libretto for a younger audience.

The audience of the future

“We have performed two major operas so far. Now we thought we should do one for the children because they are our audience of the future.”

The opera has been abridged from its original 200-minute format to a one-hour performance.

Fourteen children aged 8-12 will take to the stage for the first performance at Tórshavn’s National Theatre on Friday. This will be followed by three further shows, one on Saturday, one on Sunday and one on Tuesday.
