Faroese babies are getting heavier
Pregnancies last longer and the average birth weight is increasing, study reveals

Babies in the Faroes have a heavier birth weight than in 2010, according to a new study.

”Faroese babies are generally heavier than those in the other Nordic countries. Pregnancies also last longer in the Faroes,” says Sunnvá Hanusardóttir Olsen, who co-authored the study.

She adds that while a high birth weight is generally considered healthy, a heavy baby can also cause complications such as an increased risk of caesarean sections and injury to the mother.

Researchers believe that genetics, the mother’s BMI and the number of children play a role in birth weight.

“We hope that our study can inspire further research into the effects of high birth weight,” says Olsen.
