Silverfish are a growing problem in homes

An increasing number of Faroese homes are being visited by long-tailed insects these days. And the same is happening in the countries around us.
The insect is known as the long-tailed silverfish (Latin: Ctenolepisma longicaudata), a grey little creature which thrives in indoor environments.
Long-tailed silverfish are not harmful to humans, but they can be a big nuisance as they wander through cracks and openings in houses.
Favourite hiding places
The long-tailed silverfish spreads quickly in the Faroes, says Heini Magnussen, manager of pest control firm Skaðadjóratænastan.
“They enter houses via building materials or in bags or clothes brought in from other buildings,” he says.
“They appear to be particularly fond of hiding away in the Troldtekt acoustic panels, which are being used in many homes today. The silverfish appear to like the material itself and also the many tiny holes.”
How to avoid them
One fairly effective way of avoiding silverfish from entering your house is by unpacking any building materials, furniture and other materials outside.
“It’s also a good idea to hang your clothes and bags up rather than putting them on the floor when you are away from your home.”
