The government has received a recommendation report from local councils in Suðuroy containing initiatives aimed at building a brighter future for the island.

The report is titled ‘Suðuroyggin og framtíðin – tilmæli um menningarátøk 2018’ (‘Suðuroy and the Future – a development plan for 2018’) and contains 11 specific initiatives.

At a meeting yesterday, Suðuroy’s seven local councils met with government representatives to discuss the current challenges facing the islands.

The overall objective of the report is the creation of new jobs on the island, but there are a number of short-term initiatives that need urgent attention, the local councils write in a press release.

After yesterday’s meeting, prime minister Aksel V. Johannesen responded to some of these concerns.

He said that Bakkafrost will be given all of the island’s four allocated salmon farming licenses, and that from 1 January 2019, pedagogical assistant courses will be available at the school in the village of Hov.

The Prime Minister added that Suðuroy locals will be offered discounted ticket prices on national transport company Strandfaraskip Landsins’ services.

He also vowed that the financial problems surrounding elderly care on the islands will be solved by this autumn.
