The population of Sandur has decreased by 57 people in the past ten years, according to Statistics Faroe Islands. On 1 January 2018, the village had a population of 520.

But now it looks like the tide may be turning as there is a growing interest in settling down in Sandur.

According to the village’s mayor, Brandur Sandoy, it’s the planned sub-sea tunnel to Sandoy that has prompted people to consider moving to the island.

“In the past six months, we have had a lot of enquiries from people wishing to build houses in Sandur.

Sandur Municipality yesterday accepted an offer from construction firm Articon to prepare 13 new building sites for residential use.

The project is estimated to cost DKK 4.4 million.

So far, 10 of the 13 sites have already been reserved, and the Municipality is considering preparing more building sites.

It is too early to specify prices, but the mayor expects the price levels will not be much higher than they used to be.
