New rental flats planned in Klaksvík

Traders in Klaksvík have joined forces to create Norðbýli, which aims to build new flats for private rental in and around the city.

There has long been a shortage of rental flats in many parts of the country.

Tórshavn City Council, for instance, set a goal in February to build 240 flats and 60 student flats by 2022.

Bústaðir, the National Housing Association, has also highlighted the shortage of rented accommodation. Bústaðir administers 244 tenancies and is planning to build some 225 flats in the capital region over the next few years. The housing association has pointed out that a collaboration between public and private actors is required to meet the great demand.

Numerous companies are currently building flats for sale, but last month the Betri consortium, together with Articon, SNA Arkitektar and SMJ Consulting Engineers formed a company which aims to build flats for rental.

And now another company, Norðbýli, a partnership between El-in, Kanjon, Klaksvíkar Sleipistøð and other local traders, is planning to do the same.

Norðbýli is believed to be the first company in Klaksvík planning to build rental flats.

The company is planning to build new 10 flats or repair an existing building.

Bústaðir is currently constructing 30 flats in Klaksvík, with some of this work being carried out by Kanjon.

Hilmar Sigmundur Kalsø Danielsen, who manages Norðbýli, says the new company is willing to work together with Bústaðir and other public authorities if needed.

Norðbýli will start its construction work as soon as it finds a suitable site or building.
