Midwives are set to go on strike today after negotiations between the Midwives’ Union and the finance ministry broke down on Tuesday

The Midwives’ Union rejected the draft settlement after their demands that salaries should match the level of responsibility were not met.

The National Hospital has prepared for the strike and has requested strike exceptions for emergencies

It is as yet unclear which and how many exceptions will be made, but the head of the Midwives’ Union, Annika Hoydal, says that help will be at hand during the stirke.

“Assistance will be provided in all urgent matters – i.e. helping with childbirth, but less urgent matters will not be attended to during the strike,” she said on Tuesday.

Emergency help is available by calling 112. Pregnant women with less urgent issues are advised to contact their GP.
