The bacterial causes of common infections and the types of infections registered in Faroese hospital patients are outlined in a new study.

The study is titled “Focus of Infection and Microbiological Etiology in Community-Acquired Infections in Hospitalized Adult Patients in the Faroe Islands” and was recently published in the BMC Infectious Diseases journal.

It is part of Marija Todorovic Markovic’s PhD thesis at the University of Southern Denmark.

Detailed information about bacteria

Study director Shahin Gaini, the head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the National Hospital of the Faroe Islands, describes the new study as follows:

“It provides detailed information about which bacteria and other micro-organisms cause infections that require hospitalisation.

“The study also outlines the types of infections and where in the body these infections occur when Faroese patients are admitted to the National Hospital. The results show that pneumonia and cystitis are the most common infections in Faroese inpatients.”

Useful data for Faroese health system

The study’s data on clinical characteristics and microbiological etiology provides new information which may be used to develop local guidelines for the managing of patients admitted with community-acquired infections.

The results also indicate a need to improve microbiological diagnostics in the Faroes.

Markovic will defend her PhD thesis in Kongshøll in Tórshavn on 28 February at 2 pm.
