Mayor slams “unfair” tunnel access road plan

Runavík municipality is being treated unfairly in the planning of the Eysturoy-Tórshavn subsea tunnel project, says Tórbjørn Jacobsen, mayor of Runavík.

The municipality’s only role in the planning process, he argues, has been to aid the creation of a construction law

In a readers’ letter, Jacobsen argues that although the transport minister has managed to create a construction law, the whole tunnel plan has evolved from nothing to a construction law, which he compares to a bouncing check for DKK 35 million.

He refers to the comments of the proposal, which state that the plan for the tunnel access road in Runavík is made by road authority Landsverk in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport.

This, Jacobsen argues, is direct confirmation that Runavík’s role in this matter has been limited to assisting with the creation of a construction law.

Runavík municipality’s citizens are shackled when it comes to the subsea tunnel infrastructure, says the mayor, who refuses to accept that Runavík citizens should be forced to pay for this project.

“The current construction law suggests that the citizens should pay, and that is something I can neither accept nor respect,” he says.
