A proposal for a nature and biodiversity law was submitted to parliament this spring, but it fell through when MPs went on their summer break in May.

New environment minister Helgi Abrahamsen says that he will resubmit the proposal with minor adjustments.

This comes after requests from nature conservationists, who have long been calling for a law to ensure that climate change effects on nature and wildlife are kept to a minimum.

“Climate change does not only affect fish. When temperatures go up, birds tend to migrate north toward colder climates,” says ornithologist Sjúrður Hammer.

“This can result in sudden depletion of our bird population, which is why we urgently need a law to help regulate this.”

Welfare law

Another major law proposal making its way back to Parliament is the welfare law proposal, which new minister of social affairs Elsebeth Mercedis Gunnleygsdóttir says she will resubmit.

This proposal was also submitted shortly before the summer break and fell through, leading to heavy criticism from numerous social service providers.
