The new building in Svínoy was meant to be used as a commune, with the aim of creating jobs and breathing new life into the village.

However, this plan has now changed. The building will instead be used for tourism purposes, as a village hall or as a youth hostel.

Jógvan Skorheim, Mayor of Klaksvík Municipality, which includes Svínoy, says that the building cannot be used as a commune because it is difficult to attract staff to the small island. Another requirement for communes is easy access to a hospital, which is not the case in Svínoy.

The original plan with the commune was expected to create 10-15 new jobs on the small island. Mayor Skorheim cannot guarantee that the new plan for the building will create as many jobs.
