Fish farming pollution under scrutiny

There has been far too little research into the harmful effect that fish farming has on sea life, and we need to do something now. This is the view of fisheries minister Høgni Hoydal after it was revealed last week that the Faroese fish farming industry creates as much environmental pollution as a city the size of Copenhagen.

He says that the political focus has so far been on bottom fish stocks in fishing grounds around the Faroe Islands, but now he wants more research being made to help us understand near-land ecosystems.

“We need to improve research on the marine life inside fjords. I am confident that the industry and politicians are interested in discussing ways to upgrade our information on this problem.”
