Public consultation on new biogas plant

How much does a biogas plant pollute the air? And how noisy and smelly is it for residents in the area?

These are some of the questions that need to be answered before Bakkafrost’s subsidiary company P/F Føroysk Náttúruorka is granted approval for building a biogas plant at Skarðshjalli in Hoyvík.

The Environment Agency has now initiated its approval process by putting the biogas plan out to public consultation. The consultation deadline is 28 February.

From waste to energy

P/F Føroysk Náttúruorka’s aim of setting up the biogas plant is to produce heat, electricity and natural fertilisers from cow manure and waste from fish farms, and at a later time potentially also from biodegradable household trash.

The company has commissioned a study which seeks to determine the environmental risks of setting up a biogas plant in the area.

The results of this study are included in the public consultation documents. Tórshavn City Council and the Nature and Environment Board will also be consulted.
