Twenty-six tonnes of rubbish cleared away
The second annual waste removal day took place over the weekend

More than 1,100 volunteers took part in the annual ‘Rudda Føroyar’ cleanup day on Saturday, removing more than 26 tonnes of rubbish.

This is four tonnes more than last year, and according to the organisers, the main reason for this year’s increase is that many old industrial areas were cleared up this year.

“Now that a lot of old rubbish which has been lying around for many years has been cleared away, it will be much easier to clear up in the coming years,” says Bjørk Berg Wiggins, one of the organisers.

Part of international campaign

Rudda Føroyar is part of the World Cleanup Day, a global social action programme aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, held on the third Saturday of September and which this year coincided with the global climate strike.

Last year, some 18 million people from 157 countries took part in the World Cleanup Day.

The Rudda Føroyar organisers are happy with this year’s result and look forward to another productive and successful cleanup day next year.
