Salmon farming expanding into the open ocean
Glyvrar-based salmon farming giant Bakkafrost is keen to expand its farming activities, but the company is running out of space.
Since most bays in the country are filled with fish farming cages, the company has now applied to the government for permission to expand its salmon farming activities out to the open ocean.
In offshore aquaculture, the cages are positioned in deeper and less sheltered waters, where ocean currents are significantly stronger than inshore.
According to researchers at Faroese aquaculture research station Fiskaaling, expanding fish farming activities into the open ocean presents great challenges, but it is certainly not impossible.
